The Power of ROE

Updated May 2025

We soapmakers are constantly on the lookout for innovative ingredients that not only elevate the quality of our creations but also provide additional benefits. One such gem is Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE), a natural and potent antioxidant derived from the rosemary plant. This beautiful extract brings countless advantages to the soapmaking process, making it a cherished ingredient among those who seek to create exquisite soaps.

Antioxidant Properties:
Rosemary Oleoresin Extract is renowned for its powerful antioxidant properties. In soapmaking, antioxidants play a crucial role in preserving the integrity of oils and fats used in formulations. As oils are prone to oxidation, which can lead to rancidity and a reduction in soap quality, adding ROE helps extend the life of handmade soaps. This not only ensures a longer-lasting product for consumers but also allows soapmakers to experiment with a wider variety of oils without compromising stability.

Natural Preservation:
Fair Isle Soap Co. strives to create soaps as naturally as possible. ROE serves as a natural preservative, enabling us to maintain the purity of our creations. By incorporating ROE into formulations, we don’t have to rely on synthetic preservatives, aligning our products with the growing demand for natural and eco-friendly alternatives.

Aroma Enhancement:
Beyond its functional benefits, ROE contributes a soothing fragrance to handmade soaps. The earthy and herbaceous scent of rosemary adds a sensory dimension to the soap, enhancing your bathing experience. This aromatic quality makes ROE an excellent choice for those looking to create soaps that not only nourish the skin but also engage the senses.

Overall, the addition of Rosemary Oleoresin Extract stands out as a wise choice for soapmakers seeking to enhance their products. From its antioxidant prowess to its natural preservation qualities and aromatic charm, ROE adds a unique dimension to handmade soaps. As the demand for natural and high-quality products continues to rise, the use of Rosemary Oleoresin Extract proves to be a valuable asset in our soapmaking business which is dedicated to creating exceptional and sustainable products for you and your family.

Soapmaker Tips:
ROE is Not a Preservative: It doesn’t prevent microbial growth, so it’s not effective for water-based products.

Usage Rate
Recommended at 0.05% to 0.5% of the total oil weight.
For example, if your oil weight is 1000g, use 0.5g to 5g of ROE.

When to Add
Add ROE directly to your oils before adding lye. This ensures it’s well incorporated and protects the oils throughout the process.

Temperature Tips
ROE is heat-sensitive, so avoid adding it at high temperatures. If you’re doing hot process soap, add ROE after the cook, when the batter has cooled slightly.

Oil Storage
You can also add ROE to oils when storing them long-term, especially if you’re bulk-storing oils prone to oxidation.

Fragrance
ROE has a mild herbal scent but is usually undetectable in the final soap. If you’re crafting delicate fragrances, test a small batch first.

Complements Other Antioxidants
For maximum shelf-life, consider pairing ROE with Vitamin E (Tocopherol). Use Vitamin E at about 0.5% for added protection.

Labeling
If you’re emphasizing natural preservation in your branding, mentioning ROE on the label can be a great selling point.
